Young people talking round a table as part of You Life Matters Programme

Independent living skills programme boosts confidence for Isle of Wight residents aged 16 to 35

Yellow Brick Road Projects will bring its You Matter life skills programme back to the Isle of Wight from 7th January 2026.

The free weekly sessions will run from 12pm to 2pm at The Foyer, 114 George Street, Ryde, PO33 2JE.

Supporting independent living skills
You Matter offers a free, accredited 14-week programme for young people aged 16 to 35.

The programme focuses on practical skills for independent living through small group sessions and personalised coaching.

Those taking part learn about budgeting, managing bills, understanding tenancy, maintaining wellbeing, building healthy relationships and preparing for employment.

Incentives and approach
Each person taking part who completes the programme receives a £50 Amazon voucher in recognition of their commitment and progress.

The Isle of Wight cohort will take part in sessions shaped by YBRP’s trauma-informed approach, which aims to create a safe, inclusive and responsive learning environment.

Reported outcomes
Yellow Brick Road Projects reports that 98% of past participants saw measurable improvements in confidence, stability or future planning.

The organisation notes that the programme has shown particular impact in areas where young people face barriers linked to housing, transport, and employment.

Participant experiences
One young person taking part said,

“All of the work readiness skills were so good for me to learn… I’ve learned how to manage bills, understand tenancy rights, and deal with landlords. It has helped me feel ready to live independently.”

Another said,

“Through You Matter I went on a short course with the School for Social Entrepreneurs, then I applied for their business school and got in.

“I’ve gained confidence, friendships and a network.”

Local context and aims
Elle Snookes, Director of Business and Partnerships at Yellow Brick Road Projects, said,

“We’re thrilled to bring You Matter back to the Isle of Wight. Young people on the Island often face additional structural barriers, and this programme is designed to meet those needs with practical tools and emotional support.”

She added,

“The outcomes speak for themselves, young people move into work, education, safe housing, and into a future they can shape.”
