Isle of Wight set for major EV charging expansion with over 1,500 new chargepoints planned

The Isle of Wight Council has confirmed that the contract to deliver the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) project has been formally awarded to EV charging provider char.gy.

An important step is set to be taken forward in enabling cleaner transport for local communities, as char.gy will support the rollout of public electric vehicle infrastructure across the Island.

No cost to the council
The long-term collaboration has been supported through £1.625 million of the Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund and significant private sector investment.

The project has not required a financial contribution from the Isle of Wight Council and will expand access to public charging for residents, particularly those without off-street parking.

Across the project, over 1,500 chargepoints will be installed.

Through the contract, the Isle of Wight Council has commissioned char.gy to design, install and maintain a network of public chargepoints, making it easier for residents to charge close to home and supporting the transition to electric vehicles.

A network built for everyone
The programme is focused on ensuring fair and convenient access to charging across the Island, helping to improve connectivity for communities and reduce barriers to EV adoption.

char.gy, supported by installation partner Joju, will also deliver wider social value initiatives as part of the rollout, including work experience opportunities, engagement with local schools, and contributions to support the Island’s natural environment.

The project represents a key milestone in delivering the Isle of Wight’s Transport Plan, which sets out a long-term vision for cleaner, more inclusive and sustainable travel by 2040.

Jones-Evans: Fantastic news for the Island
Councillor Julie Jones-Evans, chair of the Economy, Regeneration, Transport and Infrastructure Committee, said,

“This is fantastic news for the Island and a real leap forward in making cleaner, greener travel accessible to everyone, especially for those who don’t have driveways.

“Installing over 1,500 new chargepoints will make a tangible difference for residents right across our communities, at no cost to the local budget.

“This project is a brilliant example of how we can deliver practical, forward‑looking change while investing in the future of our towns and the people who live here.”

Lewis: Enabling every resident to make the switch to electric vehicles
Char.gy CEO John Lewis said,

“Partnering with Isle of Wight Council marks an important step forward in delivering fair, accessible charging infrastructure at scale. At char.gy, our focus is on enabling every resident, especially those without off-street parking, to make the switch to electric vehicles with confidence.

“This rollout will not only support cleaner transport but also create lasting social and environmental value for the Island. We’re proud to play a role in helping the Isle of Wight bring their vision for a more sustainable and inclusive transport future to life.”
