The Isle of Wight features as part of a new Channel 4 series as comedian and television presenter Paul Merton, explores some of the world’s most remarkable railways.
Paul Merton: Driving Amazing Trains begins on Thursday 9th April at 8pm, and takes the presenter across Europe and the UK as he learns what it takes to operate these historic machines.
Personal journey at the heart of the series
As well as getting behind the controls, Merton reflects throughout the series on his father’s life working on the railways, reconnecting with the roots of his lifelong passion for trains.
The programme follows him as he meets the people who keep the railways running, from engineers and conductors to passengers with stories of their own.
Challenges of the footplate
Each location presents its own technical demands, with Merton tackling steep gradients, tight curves, and pinpoint platform stops along the way.

The series also examines the engineering behind the routes themselves, including tunnels carved through mountains, bridges spanning dramatic ravines, and spiralling tracks that push the boundaries of what railway builders once thought possible.
Isle of Wight among the destinations
Alongside visits to Germany, France, Switzerland, Wales and Northern England, the Isle of Wight features as one of the series’ destinations.
Tom Porter, Creative Director, BriteSpark Films, said,
“This series is a celebration of engineering, nostalgia, and the joy of discovery, and Paul brings it all to life with his trademark wit and warmth.
“We’re proud to be producing a show that not only explores the beauty of Britain and Europe by rail but also connects with audiences through Paul’s personal story.”
