The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary is proud to announce a major milestone in 2026: 50 years of caring for animals and inspiring visitors on the Isle of Wight.

Formerly known as the Isle of Wight Zoo, the Sanctuary has evolved over five decades into a place of rescue, rehabilitation, and compassion – and, as part of its anniversary celebrations, it is inviting the local community to help tell its story.
Five decades of rescue and compassion
For half a century, the Sanctuary has held a unique place in the hearts of Island residents, staff, volunteers and visitors alike.
Generations have passed through its gates, encountered remarkable animals, and created lasting memories that are woven into the fabric of the Isle of Wight itself.

Generations of memories
As it reaches this significant anniversary, the Sanctuary is calling on people from across the Island to share their personal memories, photographs, and memorabilia.
These could come from former staff members who worked at the zoo or Sanctuary over the years, long-time supporters, visitors, or even those who had chance encounters beyond its gates – perhaps spotting their founder, Jack Corney (pictured right) with his animals in unexpected places, including local pubs, or strolling along the beach.
Bates: We know there are so many wonderful stories out there
Lawrence Bates, CEO of the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, said,
“All of these memories are part of who we are.
“Our history isn’t just about the animals – it’s about the people who have been part of this journey over the past 50 years.
“We know there are so many wonderful stories out there, and we would love the community to share them with us as we celebrate this milestone together.”
How to share your story
Anyone who would like to take part is encouraged to send any photographs, memorabilia and personal anecdotes that capture these moments in time to [email protected].
Contributors are asked to include any details that help will bring their memories to life. Selected submissions may be featured as part of anniversary events and digital content throughout the year.
As the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary celebrates 50 years, this is a chance to reflect on its remarkable journey – and to recognise the community that has helped shape it.
