Isle of Wight council approves expansion of Whippingham Technology Park

The second phase of new warehouse plans has been unanimously approved by the Isle of Wight Council.

Isle of Wight Distribution is to expand at Whippingham Technology Park, on the main road into East Cowes.

Following a surge in business, planning agent, Phil Salmon, said its current distribution centre in Merstone is “not fit for purpose” and said these plans future-proof the parcel delivery firm

The company currently delivers between 7,500 and 10,000 parcels a day around the Island, working for major companies like DHL, Parcelforce and Yodel.

At last night’s meeting at County Hall, the second of two large warehouses was given the go-ahead by planning committee members.

The first was passed in January and will sit opposite the Isle of Wight College’s CECAMM building.

The second will fill the remaining space at the technology park, adjacent to the Certas Energy depot.

Details like scale, design and layout will be determined at a later date.

The site is owned by the Isle of Wight Council and the authority will sell the plot — which has been earmarked for employment opportunities — to Isle of Wight Distribution.
