Yokogawa Marex team members on Gurnard beach after the beach clean

Cowes tech firm Yokogawa Marex uncovers 35-million-year-old turtle fossil on beach clean

Colleagues from Cowes software company Yokogawa Marex recently took part in a beach clean, covering the local coastline from Cowes Green to Gurnard.

Grabbing a litter picker and a bin bag each, 19 employees set out on a sunny spring day at low tide as part of the company’s work to benefit the local community and environment.

Unusual finds along the shoreline
Finds included clothing, an old metal tractor seat, several car parts and – apt for a technology company – a circuit board and a computer hard drive.

Plus, discarded fishing nets and other plastics.

35-million-year-old sea turtle shell steals the show
However, the best find of the day was a fossil which Yokogawa Marex has since been told is part of a 35-million-year-old sea turtle shell.

Wayne Matthews, Divisional Director, explained,

“Although part of a Japanese-owned global company, it’s always been important for us to work within and benefit our local area here on the Island.

“We picked up plenty of waste that would otherwise have been washed out to sea, while spending a few working hours outside on a sunny day.”

Litter pickers available from Ryde Library
The litter pickers were supplied by Ryde Library, which lends them out to anyone wishing to clean up their local area.

60 years of innovation and a call to former colleagues
This year, Marex will celebrate 60 years since its founding in Cowes.

The company wants to get in touch with as many former employees as possible ahead of an anniversary event in the autumn.
