A self-taught traditional oil painter will be displaying his work to visitors in Ventnor this May, as part of Isle of Wight Open Studios.
Robert Carter paints full-time in retirement, working exclusively in oils on canvas across a wide range of subjects – portraits, landscapes, seascapes, still lifes and beach scenes.
A journey through colour, form and light
His style draws on traditions spanning from 18th-century English painting through to early 20th-century and French post-impressionist influences.
Robert describes each painting as something of an unpredictable pursuit,
“For me, the process of painting each picture is an adventure in colour, form and light and shade and, when it works, is half skill and half luck, to be honest. Hence the variety in subjects!”

A vibrant creative hub in the heart of Ventnor
Peer Studios Gallery serves as a shared studio space and hub of creativity, bringing together a range of artistic styles and mediums.
Hosts April Dixcey and Francis Safaie-Brown will welcome Robert and his new works to the gallery.
You can find out more about Robert Carter and his work on the Isle of Wight Open Studios website.
