Isle of Wight council to inspect works at Winter Gardens following concerns being raised

On 4th April, the owner of The Hambrough Group, Kevin Sussmilch of Wight House Limited, was given 16 weeks to complete a range of actions, after he was served with an initial letter under Section 215 (s215) of the Town & Country Planning Act 1990 to tidy up the building and grounds of the Ventnor Winter Gardens.

Two months later work has begun on the exterior of the building.

Required standard of works
However, readers who have seen the work taking place have been in touch with OnTheWight concerned that the works might not meet the standards of the specific requirements set by the council.

For example, prior to repainting, cracked/defective render must be repaired, the appropriate primer/undercoat applied and that followed by at least two coats of exterior paint.

Works will be inspected
OnTheWight got in touch with the Isle of Wight council’s Planning Authority to find out whether inspections are made during the progress of the work. Based on our query, an officer will be checking the site within the next week.

A spokesperson for the council replied,

“The Planning Authority does check works in progress, particularly for larger buildings that require extensive works to remedy the breach that is occurring.

“In addition, where people write to us to say that works being carried out may not be carried out in accordance with our requirements, an officer will visit the site and check the standard of the works.

“Based on the information provided, an officer will check this site within the next week.”

You can help
As the council has limited resources, if you see something that doesn’t look up to the standard required, you can help the Planning Authority by sending in photos or reports of your concerns.
