Matthew Mussellwhite has put forward a new proposal that would link restoration of the landmark 1936 Art Deco building with skills training for young Islanders.
Training linked to restoration
Matthew, a local builder solely leads the proposal. Under the plan, young people would learn alongside experienced tradespeople and gain experience in construction work, heritage restoration and traditional coastal building methods.
Matthew said,
“As a builder, I look at the Winter Gardens and I see an incredible opportunity for our people.
“The Government says they want to support community wealth and youth training.
“We have a major town landmark in decline, and we have local lads and girls who need quality trades training. We want to bring those two needs together.”
Isle of Wight Council has been approached for comment on the condition of the building and .
Concerns over building condition and enforcement
Matthew says he remains concerned about the condition of the building, pointing to possible effects from coastal exposure, carbonation and concrete decay.
He also argues that recent repair works do not address wider issues affecting the site.
Matthew is calling on Isle of Wight Council’s planning department to carry out detailed inspection work focused on the roof and rear elevations and to consider further enforcement measures.
He said,
“A bit of paint doesn’t fix a leaking roof or structural concrete failure.
“The town is fully behind us across all generations.
“We aren’t going to let this site sit empty out of stubbornness.
“We want to build a future for Ventnor, and for the council to take a more community-focused approach.”
Looking for long-term partners
Matthew says he wants to work with heritage funders, training providers and social enterprises on a long-term future for the site, with the aim of securing a viable community-led solution through partnership working and a long-term acquisition strategy.
OnTheWight has approached Isle of Wight Council and the building owner with a series of questions and will update once we hear back.
