Isle of Wight Publisher celebrated for global success in Chinese Art publishing

Ryde-based publishing house Gerald Davison Ltd. has received a Business Excellence Award and been named Leading Chinese Art Books Publisher 2025 by Acquisition International business magazine.

The recognition highlights the global impact of their specialist academic work in the field of Chinese ceramics.

Major success for groundbreaking ceramic reference book
The company’s flagship title, Marks on Chinese Ceramics, has become a widely respected reference since its first release in 2021.

Now in its third reprint, the 400-page book was the first by the publisher to be sold exclusively online.

Earlier titles were distributed through traditional book trade channels.

Strong international demand, especially from the USA
With global distribution managed from the Isle of Wight, Marks on Chinese Ceramics has generated sales of over £200,000 to date.

Around 60 per cent of those sales have come from buyers in the United States.

Gerald Davison Ltd. is run by husband-and-wife team Gerald and Yuriko Davison, both longstanding experts in the field.

Extensive reference tool used worldwide
The book catalogues almost 4,200 individual marks found on Chinese ceramics from the Tang Dynasty (618–906 CE) through to the Republic period in the early 20th century.

It presents each mark in either Chinese kaishu (regular script) or zhuanshu (seal script), alongside English translations, pinyin romanisation and historical context.

A colour section features images provided by international auction house Sotheby’s.

Endorsed by industry experts
The book is used by leading museums, auction houses, dealers and collectors around the world.

At the time of publication, Colin Sheaf, Global Head of Asian Art at Bonhams auctioneers, said,

“Top marks for your new edition!

“Hugely expanded, crucially extended to cover 20th century ceramics for the first time, and handily cross-referenced for maximum usefulness, this is one of the very few reference books that is genuinely essential for anyone interested in Chinese taste ceramics.”

Marks on Chinese Ceramics is available to purchase online.
