Island Labour has published new data revealing an estimated 29,495 Island renters are set to benefit from new era on Friday 1st May, as Labour’s flagship Renters’ Rights Act comes into force with tough new rules including:
- End to no fault evictions
- Stronger protections against backdoor evictions
- Banning discrimination against families with children and people on benefits
- Better rights to request a pet
- Stronger enforcement measures for councils
“A new era for Island renters”
Publishing the figures, Labour’s Steve Double said,
“This a new era for Island renters. This is what Labour was elected to do – new rights to restore fairness for renters who too often have been evicted through no fault of their own, discriminated against because of their circumstances or held back from living as they choose by unjustifiable rules. All of that changes with the Renters’ Rights Act.
“The scale of the housing crisis on the Island is intolerable. Hundreds of Island families are stuck living in B&Bs, hostels and caravans as a direct consequence Section 21 evictions and of the Council’s failure to build the social rental homes Islanders need.
“That’s why Island Labour have committed to taking back control of planning decisions, by passing the Island Planning Strategy, and building high quality modular homes on council owned land – moving Island families out of expensive council-funded temporary accommodation, and reinvesting the money that saves on building/buying more social rental homes for Islanders.”
