Isle of Wight Regiments Would Have Defended England Against French Attack In 18th Century

UK Government papers, the State Papers Online, which are being labelled as ‘Historical Wikileaks’, are being released today.

paperThe Scotsman has been looking through them and has picked up a letter sent by the Duke of Marlborough on 25 September 1710 which features a mention of the Isle of Wight Regiments.

Call in the Isle of Wight!
Marlborough reported on intelligence that the French planned to invade England – via Scotland, because they believed they would find ‘friends’ there, ‘willing to help’.

His recommendation was that, “If this proves true, the five regiments of the Isle of Wight should be moved northwards and a squadron be placed off Dunkirk.”

Sounds like if you want a job doing, get in the Isle of Wight!
