Letter: Starvation and chaos – Urgent call for action in the Gaza humanitarian crisis

OnTheWight always welcomes a Letter to the Editor to share with our readers – unsurprisingly they don’t always reflect the views of this publication. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch and of course, your considered comments are welcome below.

I feel compelled to comment on man’s inhumanity to man.

Yesterday (23/7) aid agencies warned about ‘mass starvation’ and an Israeli government creating “chaos, starvation, and death”.

“With supplies now totally depleted, humanitarian organisations are witnessing their own colleagues and partners waste away before their eyes.”

On Tuesday (22/7) “Malnourishment is soaring. Starvation is knocking on every door.” said the secretary-general of the United Nations.

The day before (21/7) the UK and 27 other countries called for an immediate end to the war in Gaza. Their joint statement saying: Israel’s aid delivery model is dangerous and condemns the “drip feeding of aid and the inhumane killing of civilians” seeking food and water.

A “litany of horrors” was taking place in Gaza, strikes killing “desperate, starving children”, said Foreign Secretary David Lammy in the House of Commons.

Will positive change happen tomorrow? Unlikely for many reasons, but I share one.

Expecting international democracy to work or protesting against what the USA wants is unlikely to make progress. History is full of examples.

Let’s not forget, last year the United Nations Assembly adopted its annual resolution on the “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”. A 62-year-old embargo.

187 countries voted to lift the embargo. Two voted against – Israel and the United States.

It’s clear where the power lies.

So much for democracy!
