Osborne Bay RIB death: Man questioned under caution

The death of a man after a collision at sea in Osborne Bay off the coast of the Isle of Wight is now the subject of a criminal investigation by Hampshire Constabulary.

A man aged in his 30s from Southampton attended a police station in Hampshire voluntarily on Monday, June 22, 2015.

Not arrested
He was questioned by detectives under caution on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter. The man was not arrested. He is not on bail but may be interviewed again pending ongoing enquiries.

Officers from Hampshire Constabulary’s Major Crime team are now leading the investigation into the death of 36-year-old Ryan Scott McKinlay from Gosport, Hampshire.

The incident
He was travelling as a passenger on a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) on the afternoon of Friday, June 19, 2015 when a collision occurred in Osborne Bay with a larger motorboat, which had been carrying the RIB on the Solent earlier the same day.

Mr McKinlay was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead on Friday evening (June 19, 2015).

A Home Office post-mortem examination to help establish the cause of death is due to be held this afternoon (Tuesday, June 23, 2015).

A family liaison officer is keeping next-of-kin informed.

HM Coroner and partner agencies have been updated.
