Protected Trees Destroyed in Petticoat Lane

Regular readers will remember the Petticoat Lane vigil that took place a couple of weekends ago, when 50 people turned out to mourn the loss of a vital tree lined footpath.

One of those attending the vigil was Island MP, Andrew Turner who tells us today that although permission was given for some of the trees to be removed as part of the Sainsbury’s development, eleven of those removed had Tree Preservation Orders on them.

Mr Turner confirmed he would be writing to Sainsbury’s questioning this serious breach, as well as writing to Steve Beynon, Chief Executive of the Isle of Wight Council asking him what action they will be taking.

Mr Turner said, “Green spaces and mature trees are important to all of us who live in Newport and other Island towns. This is especially true for people who, for one reason or another, can’t easily visit the countryside. It is easy to destroy historic and natural features in our towns, but once done, it is almost impossible to get them back.”
