Ryde shoppers greeted with carrots and chocolate in Youth Trust mental health outreach

Members of the Isle of Wight Youth Trust‘s Taskforce took to the streets of Ryde this week – walking two carrots.

The unusual choice of walking companion served as a conversation starter, giving the young people an opportunity to talk to members of the public about young people’s mental health and the work of the charity.

The group handed out chocolate eggs and candy sticks carrying positive messages to everyone they spoke to.

Festive inspiration
Paul Savill, who leads on youth engagement for the Youth Trust, explained that the idea came directly from the young members of the Taskforce themselves. He said,

“This walk was devised by the young members of the Taskforce following a similar festive carrot walk in December when it was much chillier.

“Our young people have chatted to all sorts of people including many visitors to the Island. It has helped build their confidence and brought smiles to those we came in contact with.”

The group paused at Network Ryde for lunch before continuing their walk into the afternoon.

Get involved
The Taskforce promotes Youth Voice and welcomes young people aged 11 to 24 who want to get involved.
