Two people have now been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a one-year-old girl who was injured on the Isle of Wight.
We were called at 11.34am on Friday, 1st August 2025 to a report of a child being taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Sadly, one-year-old Jayla-Jean Mclaren died in hospital on Sunday, 3rd August 2025.
Previously arrested and released
Prior to her death, a 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, both from Newport, were previously arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
Following further enquiries, we can update you that our investigation has today reached the stage where we have re-arrested those people on suspicion of murder.
They remain in custody.

Detective Superintendent Rod Kenny said,
“We know this case has caused considerable distress within the community and our thoughts remain with those affected by Jayla-Jean’s death.
“The arrests made today are just one part of a much wider set of enquiries in our investigation to establish exactly what happened to Jayla-Jean, and those enquiries remain ongoing.
“We would like to reiterate that you should not speculate on this case, particularly on social media, as this could affect our investigation.”
