Ventnor traders and town councillors have joined forces to launch the Ventnor Roads Group.
The new group aims to give shopkeepers and residents a stronger say in how road closures and utility works affect the town.
Traders voice their frustration
Frustration among the Ventnor Traders Association sparked the move. Members raised concerns about the way frequent roadworks, including those Island Roads and utility firms carry out, hit local businesses and put off visitors.
Some traders report a sharp drop in footfall and takings.
Poor communication about planned works, confusing diversion signs, and clashing closures all contribute to the problem.
A direct line to decision-makers
The Ventnor Roads Group wants to build a formal channel between the community and the organisations that plan infrastructure works.
Members will log concerns as they arise. They also plan to push for earlier warning of upcoming roadworks.
Clearer signage and better-planned diversions sit high on the group’s list of demands. The group intends to open a direct dialogue with Island Roads, the Isle of Wight Council, and utility companies.
Councillor calls for better planning
Ventnor Town Councillor Karl Hunter helped set up the group.
He explained why it matters,
“This group represents a collective effort to ensure that those responsible for roadworks understand the real impact their decisions have on our community.”
He added,
“We’re not here to obstruct necessary works, but to demand better communication, planning, and consideration for local businesses.”
How to get involved
