Spinnakers and a buzzard: filming Round the Island Race 2026

Local filmmaker Paul Knights spent the whole of Round the Island Race 2026 chasing the fleet around the coast, and once again has produced some magical footage.

Paul had marked the date well in advance, and a forecast of steady breeze convinced him it would be worth the effort.

An early start at Cowes
His day began at 5.30am when he left the house, reaching Cowes an hour later for the 7am start.

From there he used his scooter to move between vantage points, a method he has relied on in previous years.

The northeasterly wind gave the opening of the race a distinctive look. He said,

“The northeasterly breeze ensured a particularly colourful start as the crews raced to get the spinnakers up to make the most of the following wind.”

A long day around the coastline
Following the race around the Island made for a lengthy but rewarding shift. He said,

“A long day but really pleasurable to follow the spectacle around our beautiful coastline.”

By the afternoon the fleet had strung out along the coast, which left him searching for a way to finish the film. He said,

“As the afternoon drew on and the fleet was more spread out I was scratching my head trying to think of a nice closing shot – the Landslip of course!”

A buzzard obliges
The Landslip delivered more than he had planned for. Paul added,

“What a piece of luck when the buzzard flew into the scene over the cluster of yachts far beyond. That’ll do!”

The editing then took him a late night and a full day to complete. We’re sure you’ll agree it makes an excellent film. Especially for those who weren’t able to get to the coast on Saturday.

Thanks Paul!
