VentnorBlog Celebrates Three Year Anniversary

Some people say of VentnorBlog, “it’s only been around for five minutes!” ….. well in Island terms, they’d be right.

VentnorBlog Celebrates Three Year AnniversaryLast weekend saw the third anniversary of VentnorBlog.

As founding readers will remember, VentnorBlog was launched on 28th September 2005.

Our first posting was an account of the detonation of an unexploded WWII mine in the haven. Luckily it happened before the new fishery had been built, because the controlled explosion caused quite a mess.

After standing for several hours, with camcorder in hand waiting for some action, finally the explosion came … and went! It was all over very quickly, but we still managed to capture the footage which we passed onto BBC Hampshire who used it on their Web site.

Growing
Over the past three years we’ve seen the blog grow from a few postings a week to an average of ten a day – aiming to provide readers with information about news and events all across the Wight.

We are now, we believe, the most widely read online news site on the Wight, with well in excess of 25,000 pages views a day.

Reader’s views
One of VentnorBlog’s strong founding principles is that the reader’s views can be just as important as those of the author of the article.

Proof of this is that we are, we believe, the only online Island news publication that welcomes reader’s comments on articles posted – providing a gage of public feeling on issues that affect us all.

We realise the irony of the fact that we’re breaking news stories almost as soon as they come out, but write about this milestone two days late. We guess it shows where our priorities are.

We’d like to thank all those who have contributed to the blog, whether you advertise, send in articles, comment on postings, add to the discussions on the VB Forum, or have sent in donations.

We couldn’t have done it without you!

If you missed the mine being detonated, here it is again!
