W. Hurst & Son (IW) Ltd has announced that its Freshwater and Shanklin branches will remain open.
The company says the decision marks a positive new chapter for the long-established independent retailer.
A comprehensive financial review led the move, as the business responded to significant economic changes affecting the retail sector.
Changes over the past year
The past year brought what the company describes as necessary transformation. The business closed its Ventnor branch in August 2025 and introduced cost-saving measures, including a voluntary redundancy programme.
Leaders say these steps have streamlined operations and removed the need for further closures or redundancies at this time.
The company states that rising operational costs and increased competition from multinational online retailers shaped those decisions.
Community support recognised
W. Hurst & Son says strong local loyalty played a major role in securing the future of the Freshwater and Shanklin branches.
The company expressed gratitude to residents who continued to shop locally during a period of uncertainty.
It also recognised the dedication of colleagues at both branches and credited their hard work and commitment with helping achieve the outcome.
Commitment to Island retail
The company acknowledges that national budget measures and changing consumer habits continue to create a complex trading environment.
Despite these challenges, W. Hurst & Son says it remains committed to serving the Isle of Wight, as it has done for more than 165 years.
The retailer operates across six locations, including its newest site within Honnor & Jeffrey near Sandown, which opens seven days a week.
