Island-based writers and video artists have the chance to apply for a new commission launched by the Isle of Wight National Landscape team (formerly known as AONB).
The project, part of a national programme called Nature Calling, aims to bring fresh perspectives to the Island’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
Two commissions available
Two commissions are being offered: a £2,000 commission for a writer, and a £3,000 commission for a video artist or filmmaker.
The initiative is part of a wider national project involving 34 National Landscapes across England, funded by DEFRA and Arts Council England.
Focus on fresh perspectives
The Isle of Wight team are especially keen to hear from creatives who are new to nature writing or who may bring different voices, experiences and audiences to the conversation about the landscape.
The project asks participants to respond to a specific part of the Isle of Wight National Landscape. Writers will explore habitats, observe locally significant species and reflect on the interaction between people and place.
They will also engage with others as part of the creative process, discussing and sharing ideas.
Writing meets film
A video artist or filmmaker will document the development of the writer’s work and create a separate creative response inspired by it.
This final film, along with the writing, will be shared on platforms managed by Isle of Wight National Landscape, the National Landscapes Association, and the Nature Calling website and social media channels.
Invitation to motion artists
The £3,000 commission is open to creatives working in any moving-image medium. It invites proposals for a short film or site-specific video work, performance, sculpture or digital installation, rooted in the Island’s designated National Landscape area.
Artists will be expected to respond to the writer’s process and to the place itself, producing work that is both interpretive and distinctive.
Applicants must be Island residents
Applicants must live on the Isle of Wight.
Sharing ideas is a core part of the project, so those taking part must be prepared to talk about their creative process.
Access support available
Access funds are available to ensure a wider range of people can take part. Applicants can request this support by completing the relevant section on the application form or by emailing [email protected].
Collaborations welcome
While the team welcomes joint applications from writers and filmmakers who have worked together before, they are particularly interested in encouraging new partnerships through this project.
Creatives are free to apply individually or as a team if they plan to co-create a piece of work.
Key dates and how to apply
The project runs from June to October 2025. Applications are open now and close on 25th May.
Writers and filmmakers will begin work on 9th June. To apply, fill out the form online.
This is a chance to contribute to a national creative conversation while celebrating and exploring the unique landscapes of the Isle of Wight.
