Blue Lamp Trust technician saves vulnerable Isle of Wight resident from gas leak

The Blue Lamp Trust has once again demonstrated its life-saving mission by protecting vulnerable members of the community. Recently, 87-year-old Irene, who lives independently on the Isle of Wight, faced a potentially life-threatening carbon monoxide incident. Thanks to the swift intervention of the Trust’s Safety Technician, Lois, the danger was quickly resolved, leaving Irene feeling safe and reassured.

What started as a concern over what Irene believed was a faulty carbon monoxide alarm turned into a critical response to an active gas leak.

Irene said,

“I wasn’t sure if the alarm was broken, but something didn’t feel right.

“Calling the Blue Lamp Trust was the best thing I could have done.”

Taking action
Lois, a trained Safety Technician at the Blue Lamp Trust, arrived promptly to investigate. She quickly confirmed the alarm was working correctly and had detected a gas leak. Lois moved Irene to a safe area, ventilated the space, and contacted the gas board using the emergency number (0800 111 999).

Irene shared,

“Lois was great.

“She knew exactly what to do and I knew I was in very safe hands.”

Recognising the need for additional precautions, Lois installed carbon monoxide alarms in every room of Irene’s home. She said,

“I didn’t even think about having alarms in other rooms or realise that the one sitting on top of the gas fire wouldn’t work because it had overheated, but Lois explained how important it was, and I felt so much better after she’d fitted them.”

A caring approach
The Trust goes beyond just addressing the immediate danger. Lois also offered Irene a winter warmer pack, which included essential items for staying comfortable during colder months.

Irene noted,

“She thought of everything.

“Even though I didn’t need it, its a great thing to offer and it was completely free”

A grateful outcome
Reflecting on the experience, Irene expressed heartfelt gratitude. She said,

“I’m very grateful for what they’ve done, very grateful. It didn’t cost me any money, and it might have saved my life.

“I’m so thankful for Lois and the Blue Lamp Trust. Without them, who knows what might have happened.”

Irene also emphasised the value of the free service.

She remarked,

“It’s amazing that this doesn’t cost a penny.

“People need to know about it. It could save so many lives.”

A life-changing experience
For Irene, the intervention was nothing short of transformative. She reflected

“I didn’t realise how serious it could have been.

“Without Lois, I might not be here talking about it. She not only fixed the problem but left me feeling more safe in my own home.”

Irene also emphasised the importance of the service being free.

“It’s so important for people like me, on their own and unsure, who can’t always afford help. I’ve been telling all my friends about them and they’re going to come and do a talk at my group after Christmas, I want everyone to know about the service the Blue Lamp Trust offers.”
