Discover the enchanting gardens that once captivated literary giants and nature enthusiasts alike. The annual Bonchurch Open Gardens event returns on 4th and 5th July 2026, offering visitors a unique chance to explore private oases that are rarely open to the public.
This year includes East Dene – open both days -the historic estate of celebrated poet Algernon Swinburne and the event is again being held in conjunction with the Isle of Wight Biosphere Festival.
Secret Gardens
For two days only, visitors can explore 16 private gardens, each revealing its own distinctive character.
From inventive planting to unique design, these hidden gems showcase the best of Bonchurch.

Historic Connections
Take the woodland walk through East Dene’s spacious grounds with sea views, now home to chickens, ducks, and peacocks This provides a unique opportunity to see the ongoing restoration work of this important historic property and grounds.
Bonchurch has long been favoured by famous residents and visitors , including Swinburne, Dickens, Thackeray, Tennyson, Keats, and Gandhi. Visitors can experience the same landscapes that inspired these literary figures.
Exotic Plants
Unusual and exotic plants thrive against the backdrop of period architecture and landscapes.
Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or appreciate natural beauty, these gardens offer much to see.

Plant Sales and Gardening Books
Garden enthusiasts can purchase plants from an established plantsman and explore progeny from specimens cultivated by local gardeners.
Cream Tea
Traditional strawberry cream tea is available on Spring Vale lawn in the heart of the village.
Village upkeep
Proceeds from the Open Gardens go towards village upkeep, hanging Baskets, Christmas Lights- helping maintain the village to be enjoyed by all.

Ticket Details
Tickets cost £8 and provide access to all participating gardens for both days. A detailed map and free shuttle bus are included.
Purchase wristbands valid for two days by cash at The Allotments or Elcombe House and cash or card at the Village Pond Gate or the Hub at Spring Vale where the cream teas are served on Village Road (look for the large yellow banner).
