Commissioner appoints new part time Assistant Commissioners

Judy Venables Judy Venables has been appointed Assistant Commissioner (Policing and Safer Communities). Her responsibilities include supporting the Commissioner in building Safer Communities by making improvements to frontline policing to deter criminals and keep communities safe.

Included in her portfolio is engagement with organisations in the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise sector to explore contributions that they might make to enable the Commissioner fulfil his vision.

Rob Jarman has been appointed Assistant Commissioner (Criminal Justice). Rob JarmanHis responsibilities will be to focus on the Criminal Justice system helping to deliver the Commissioner’s priorities of placing victims and witnesses at the heart of the wider criminal justice system, reducing crime and anti-social behaviour, and reducing re-offending.

Both Assistant Commissioners will also assist Simon Hayes across Hampshire in meeting members of the public, community groups, and partner organisations.

Prior to becoming an Independent Member of the Hampshire Police Authority in 2007, Judy had a full career in the Army leaving as a Colonel in 2006. Until recently she was the Chair of Test Valley Community Safety Partnership. Judy has lived near Andover in North West Hampshire for more than 30 years and has a particular interest in crime issues that face rural communities.

Rob Jarman recently completed 30-years service as a police officer with Hampshire Constabulary. He served all ranks up to Superintendent in both uniform and CID roles, his last four years as the Head of Criminal Justice.

Mrs Venables is due to commence her role from Monday, September 23 while a start date for Mr Jarman is still to be confirmed.

Simon Hayes said of the appointments:

“I am delighted to announce these two new appointments and welcome Rob and Judy to my team. Since my election in November 2012, firm foundations have been laid to set in place my vision to create ‘social change’. These two appointments will now enable me to drive this forward and meet my election pledge to influence change, and address the social causes of criminality and offending.

“Both candidates bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience and I look forward to working with them both in the future to make Hampshire and the Isle of Wight safer places to live, work and visit.”

Talking of her appointment, Judy Venables said:

“I am absolutely thrilled to have been appointed as one of Mr Hayes’ Assistant Commissioners as he builds his team to deliver his vision and priorities. I look forward to working with the Constabulary and other partners to make real change for the communities of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight despite the funding challenges that we all face.”

Whilst Rob Jarman said

“I am delighted to join the Commissioner and his team. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape, influence and improve the delivery of relevant services for the people of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.”

Also joining the Commissioner’s team in the coming month are Hampshire County Council’s former Head of Commissioning, Alan Hagger, as Head of Strategic Commissioning, James Payne, Estates Strategy and Delivery Director, also a former Hampshire County Council employee, plus Alison Dewar– Head of Performance and Delivery. Alison was previously employed as a Performance Specialist with the Audit Commission.
