Electric car being charged on street

Completion of Isle of Wight EV charging points hindered by widespread stock shortages, say council

As News OnTheWight reported last week, the long battle for Electric Vehicle (EV) owners who rely on public charging points on the Isle of Wight trundles on.

Our most recent report focused on two EV charging points in Ventnor’s Central Car Park that had been seemingly abandoned.

News OnTheWight had asked the Isle of Wight council what was happening with them and this evening (Monday) they shared the following response.

IWC: We have alerted our contractor carrying out the work
An Isle of Wight council spokesperson told News OnTheWight,

“We would like to thank local residents in Ventnor for highlighting the matter with us.

“As soon as we became aware of the situation, we alerted our contractor carrying out the work, Joju, who has now cordoned off the area while work continues. It is normal for the first fix infrastructure shown in the photos to be installed in advance of the chargepoint.

“Our contractors are working to install our chargepoints as quickly as possible against a number of challenges including widespread charge point stock shortages and other issues which are beyond our, and our contractor’s, control.

“New installations of this nature are dependent on the commitment of several external agencies; each step of the installation process is determined by the responsiveness of these agencies prior to the final installation and commissioning of a new chargepoint.”

Project completed by February 2023
The spokesperson went on to say,

“Although it’s difficult to commit to dates, we hope to see some of the sites start to go live over the next four weeks, with the project being completed by February 2023.”
