Council will actively support the Island’s native food and drinks industry

A motion proposed by Cllr John Nicholson (Con) at Wednesday’s full council meeting was accepted with no opposition.

Cllr Nicholson called on the council to actively encourage the promotion of its native drinks industry, with the IW food industry being added to the motion as an amendment by Cllr Jordon (Ind) at functions and in hospitality as a prime feature.

Native industries solely neglected
Cllr Nicholson argued that native breweries and vineyards are sorely neglected in this country in favour of chemical and non-descript imports.

Cllr Hillard (Ind) suggested that amendment could’ve gone further, ‘the council actively encourage the promotion of its native food and drinks industry’, not limiting it to functions or hospitality.

Working together
Cllr Jordon praised Cllr Nicholson for the manner in which he proposed the motion and accepted the amendment, giving ample time for all members to consider.

“It is a measure of how we can work together for change.”

Thirty five members voted in favour of the motion, with three abstentions.
