From 1st July to 30th August 2026, and for the third year running, a range of specialist beach accessibility equipment will be available to book online through a new website.
The equipment has been carefully selected to enable people with mobility challenges to access and enjoy the beach, sea and seafront with greater independence and confidence.
What equipment is available?
Available equipment includes:
- Hippocampe and Sandcruiser sand wheelchairs
- Mobi-Chair and DeBug sea wheelchairs
- Wheeleez sand rollator
- Stabilo positioning cushion for wheelchair users
Where to collect and how to get there
All booked equipment can be collected daily from the Lifeguard Station on North Walk between 10am and 6pm throughout the summer operating period.

Boardwalks and Changing Places facility
In addition to the equipment, visitors can benefit from more than 300 metres of accessible boardwalk installed at both Harbour Beach, next to the Marina, and the beach adjacent to the Lifeguard Station (near the Canoe Lake).
The boardwalk provides easier access across the sand, helping more people reach and enjoy the shoreline.
A fully equipped Changing Places facility is also located just metres from the start of the boardwalk at the Eastern Gardens Toilets. The facility includes a ceiling hoist (users should bring their own sling), an adjustable adult-sized changing bench, a peninsular toilet, height-adjustable washbasin and privacy screen.

It is now available year-round following the purchase of the unit by Ryde Town Council and is open daily from 7am to 10pm during the summer months and 7am to 7pm during the winter.
The organisations behind the project
This initiative has been made possible through the collective support of local organisations, businesses and funders who share a commitment to making Ryde’s coastline more accessible and inclusive for everyone. Special thanks go to NaShers, Toucan Diversity and Hovertravel, whose encouragement, expertise and ongoing commitment have helped shape and support the project since its inception in 2024.

How the scheme is funded
Seed funding from Ryde Town Council, Isle of Wight Council, The National Lottery and Sport England, alongside support from the 2024 Crowdfunder campaign, enabled the purchase of specialist accessibility equipment and the establishment of the service.
Ongoing delivery is funded by Ryde Town Council, ensuring the equipment remains available throughout the summer season, with opportunities for organisations to support the service’s future growth and long-term sustainability through sponsorship and partnership.

Ryde Town Mayor, Karen Lucioni said,
“Everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the freedom, enjoyment and wellbeing that comes from spending time at the seaside.
“By providing specialist equipment, accessible routes and high-quality changing facilities, we are helping to remove barriers and create a more inclusive beach experience for residents and visitors alike.
“We are incredibly grateful to our supporters and funders for helping us make this vision a reality.”
The new facilities and equipment are expected to benefit local residents, visitors to the Island and families seeking accessible leisure opportunities throughout the summer season and beyond.
