IW Green Party report calls for Isle of Wight to adapt to more frequent heatwaves

The Isle of Wight Green Party have launched an Islandwide survey and report, looking at providing both short and longer term support for Islanders to adapt to more frequent heatwave conditions in the months and years to come.

Report follows record-breaking June heatwave
Entitled “Hot Hot Hot – how best can we prepare for the inevitable future heatwave events?”, the report was collated after a public meeting in Newport to discuss the record-breaking weeklong heatwave in June.

Adaptation as important as cutting emissions, party argues
Whilst organisations across the globe continue to press for mitigation of climate change by reducing fossil fuel emissions which contribute towards global heating, the heatwave shows that it is equally important to make some adaptations in both society and our personal lives in order to minimise the impact which this global heating will have upon our health, our public services and society as a whole.

An IW Green Party spokesperson said,

“All the evidence points towards heatwaves and extreme weather events being more frequent. The Met Office predicts that by 2050 in the South of England, summer temperatures ‘of 45° could be a serious possibility’.

“On the Isle of Wight, we must escalate the necessary plans to meet the reality of these more frequent and intense hot weather in the immediate future.”

How to access the report and take part
The report can be accessed via the IW Green Party website (also embedded below for your convenience).

All Islanders are invited to take part in the short “Preparing the Island for more frequent heatwaves” survey which can be accessed online.

Survey open until 19th July
The survey will remain open until 19th July 2026, and the results will be published on the website.
