From Isle of Wight to Gaza

Thanks to Linda for this update on Saturday’s effort in Cowes to collect money and raise awareness for aid to Gaza. Ed

Tribute to GazaOn Saturday I lent a hand on a stall in Cowes raising money for aid: books, medicines etc. to Gaza.

It’s never easy asking for donations, especially when times are hard, but, despite this there was a steady flow of generous Island residents and visitors stopping to put money in the collection tins.

Thanks to everyone who took time to talk to us, donate money, sign the petition, take a leaflet to read, or bought refreshments for us.

Peter Venner heading back to Gaza
If all goes well Peter Venner will soon be travelling from the Island to join a flotilla of boats to Gaza with that much needed aid.

Monday was commemoration day of the Nakba, (Catastrophe day) when 700,000 Palestinians were forced out of their homeland by Israeli forces back in 1948.

Some went to Gaza. Israel marks the same day, 15th May, as ‘Independence Day’ because it was the day of Israel’s creation in historic Palestine. Recently the Israeli Knesset (parliament) passed a law denying them the right to commemorate the Nakba.

As a member of that parliament Haneen Zoabi said “The Nakba is not just part of Palestinian history, it’s also part of the Jewish history of this land.”
