On Wednesday 18th June, Year 13 Fashion and Textiles students from the Island VI Form presented their final collections in a sold-out runway show at Independent Arts in Newport.
The event showcased original garments inspired by insects and bioluminescence, with students drawing on design influences from fashion icons such as Galliano, McQueen, and Van Herpen.
Two worlds: Daylight and night
Each student interpreted the theme of insect transformation by night, using innovative materials and techniques to create clothing with dual appeal—eye-catching by day, and luminous by night.
Garments included glow-in-the-dark elements such as beading, threads and integrated lighting, highlighting the students’ ability to blend technical skill with artistic vision.
Raising funds and aspirations
The show raised over £220 for Independent Arts, the Isle of Wight charity that uses creative activities to improve wellbeing and reduce social isolation in the community.
Organisers praised the students’ professionalism and creativity, noting that their work reflected positively on themselves, their families and the college.
Celebrating talent and hard work
Sarah Cox, Course Leader, said,
“I would like to congratulate this year’s cohort.
“The outcomes that they have produced this year are a reflection of the hard work and determination that they have shown throughout the whole of their course.”
She added,
“They all really embraced the challenge of adding bioluminescence to their garments, and they all produced unique and stunning pieces.
“We are expecting extremely impressive results in the summer, and I am looking forward to seeing where their talents will take them in the future.”
