Isle of Arts: Spotlight On Up And Coming Island Film Makers

A reminder of what’s on offer during the Celebration of Film at this weekend’s Isle of Arts Festival. Ed

Clip from The Last ResortAt Isle of Arts we are hugely impressed by the fund of homegrown film making talent on the Island and our day-long Celebration of Film on Saturday 16 April will include an entertaining showcase of short films by members of the Wight Film Network.

This free session features The Fossil Hunters, 17-year-old Niton director Joseph Thurbin’s engaging story about his dadʼs passion for fossils; and The Last Resort, Russell Oastler’s funny and illuminating documentary about life-long residents and attraction owners in the seaside town of Southsea battling against the erosion of Britain’s traditions. This secured him the 2011 Minghella short film prize last month.

Other locally produced films in the line-up are Bramble Bank Cricket by Jamie Williams, Wake Up IOW by Ollie Williams (Winner 2010 Minghella Young Film Maker award) and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by Carol & Edward Lyon.

Puckpool Skateboard by Wight Trash Skateboards & Andrew Wilks showcases some super slow motion tricks and jumps, shot on Canon DSLR and Vfringe Festival Promos 2010 by WightFilm features new performances from Michael Champion (The Shutes) and Holly Kirby.

The session, which kicks off at 5.30pm, will also include a VTV Showcase by VentnorTV – a selection of the Community WebTV output, plus more to be confirmed.

Other film events throughout the day
Isle of Arts’ Celebration of Film kicks off at noon with The Making of Tales of the Riverbank – Dave Ellison reveals the backstage secrets of working with Hammy the Hamster and his friends.

This will be followed at 2pm by film historian Tony Dalton talking about the work of special effects pioneer Ray Harryhausen and introducing his 1981 feature Clash of the Titans.

Producer and independent award-winning film director Bruce Webb will be talking about his work and screening one of his comedy shorts before introducing our classic feature Stand By Me.

After 2pm the festival box office opens on the corner of Pier Street and Albert Street, Ventnor and all tickets may be purchased from there during the festival
