Isle of Wight Conservative group to elect new leader after Robertson’s resignation

Last updated:

Councillor Joe Robertson, leader of the Isle of Wight group of Conservative councillors, has today (Thursday) announced his resignation as group leader.

His decision comes shortly after his selection to represent the party in the forthcoming General Election for the new Isle of Wight East constituency.

Moving on to new challenges
Councillor Robertson has stated that he wishes to devote his full energy and time to campaigning for the key issues affecting East Wight residents.

Among these issues, Robertson emphasises the need for affordable housing, job creation and opportunities, addressing anti-social behaviour, and advancing health and social care support.

Continued commitment
Despite stepping down as the leader of the largest group on the council, Robertson described his tenure as a privilege.

He will continue to serve in his role as Chair of the Corporate Scrutiny Committee, a position elected by the Full Council, and as a member of the Health and Social Care Policy and Scrutiny Committee.

Leadership transition
The Conservative Group will appoint a new Leader in the forthcoming days, with Robertson expressing his eagerness to collaborate with the successor.

In the interim, Councillor Paul Brading will take up the role of acting Leader.
