Isle of Wight ice hockey player suffers serious injury: GoFundMe appeal aims to take the pressure off

Isle of Wight resident and ice hockey player, Aidan Doughty (aka Doughts), suffered a serious injury at the weekend, breaking his lower back whilst playing for the Basingstoke Bisons.

Aidan, who is also on the Isle of Wight Raiders team, was injured whilst taking an awkward hit during the third period of the game and was stretchered off the ice.

Taken to Southampton General
He was initially taken to Basingstoke hospital but then transferred to Southampton hospital on Monday afternoon to have surgery on his broken lower back. The operation has gone well, but Aidan will be off the ice for some time.

More importantly, as Aidan is a self-employed electrician this injury means he’ll be unable to work for the foreseeable future.

Fundraising appeal to “take the pressure off slightly”
His Club Captain, George Norcliffe and defence man, Brendan Baird, have set up a fundraising appeal to help him during his recovery period.

They said,

“We are very aware that this is a difficult time to ask anyone to dig into their pockets, however with the cost of living as it is and the prospect of not working for some time, we have created a GoFundMe page for Doughts, in the hope to take the pressure off slightly.”

He’d be mortified, but also first to donate if it was for someone else
They went on to add,

“For anyone who does know him personally, you would know he would be mortified to know we have set this up. But he would be the first person to donate for someone else.

“We are asking for any donation possible, big or small, it would be incredibly appreciated, it will go a long way to give Doughts some peace of mind whilst focusing on his recovery.

“We will do anything we can to support Doughts, we are desperate to have him back on the ice with us as soon as possible and we wish him all the best with his upcoming surgery and recovery.”
