IW Girlguiding perform and shine

Girl Guides

Girlguiding South West England has been looking for talented girls able to sing and ‘Perform’ on a large stage.

Across the region, including the Island, heats have been taking place since the start of the year and girls have been performing as solo acts, in duets and in groups.

With an Island final held at Ryde Junior School the winners of the various age groups will now go on to the regional final to be held in Romsey before the overall winners will perform on stage at the Bournemouth International Centre. (BIC)

At the BIC in April the girls will be on stage with JLS, Loveable Rogues and Aiden Grimshaw before a packed audience of members of Girlguiding in a concert-‘Shine’.

Winners of the Isle of Wight final

Brownies and Guides (aged 9-12) Sophia Houghton (Arreton Brownies)

Guides and Senior Section (aged 13-16) Jazmine Heath (Young Leader Binstead Guides)

Senior Section (16-25) Lottie and Sarah Harris (Young Leaders 10th Newport Brownies and Carisbrooke Rangers)

All contestants were presented with certificates and the winners with a trophy in each age group at this event which was organised by Marion O’Nions (Girlguiding IW-Music Advisor).

Rainbows and younger Brownies perform too
In addition to the contest, younger members, Rainbows and younger Brownies, were invited by Island Commissioner Janet Lovell to perform in readiness of entertaining guests and members at the Girlguiding IW Annual Review to be held later in the year.

Winner of the younger age group was Shania Swinfield from 11th Newport Rainbows

At the Annual Review all the winners, runners up and the younger girls will be on stage in a performance before an invited audience.

The judges
Judges from the mainland were Lisa-Jayne Lewis from Surrey and Caz Atthill from Hampshire who are both involved with professional musical production. They became friends by meeting through Guiding 20 years ago. Both have been Brownies, Guides, Rangers, Young Leaders & Adult Leaders. They praised all the girls for excellent performances, costumes and presentation but gave helpful tips on how to improve when connecting with an audience.

Winner of the aged 13-16 group, Jazmine Heath had just returned to the Island after performing in Glasgow as one of the winning members of ‘Resonate’ in the BBC’s Glee Club competition which was screened live on Friday afternoon. Jazmine sang her own composition ‘ I Love You’ and scored 99 marks for the Girlguiding competition.
