John Cattle's Skate Club Apr 2022

John Cattle’s Skate Club has gone from teaching 25 people a week to now helping hundreds of all ages

It’s hard to imagine that just eight years ago John Cattle’s Skate Club ran only three lessons a week, helping around 25 people learn the skill of skateboarding.

The Skate Club is now teaching in 15 schools, have over 400 people skating every week with them and have trained up five other skate coaches.

Wootton Skate Club
After coaching for around three years, John and Zoe, who run the skate club, as well as Wight Trash skateboard and clothing shop in Ryde, decided to look for a more permanent base.

John said,

“We had no money to invest in things, it was just me, with Zoe behind the scenes, and a bunch of friends helping out.

“I happened to come across a church hall at Wootton that was barely being used and the kind people of St Mark’s Church let us start up there.”

Tremendous growth
John went on to explain just how big the club has grown,

“Looking back at pictures like this I had no idea how things would go. I love skating, I loved teaching people to skate, but I would never have thought that eight years on from this, we’d be teaching in 15 schools each term, have over 400 people skating every week at Wootton, that we’d have trained up an awesome team of five other skate coaches and been able to work on loads of really exciting projects with other organisations.”

Cattle: It remains the best job in the world
As you can imagine, it’s not all been a bed of roses. It’s through the hard work and dedication of all involved – building up trust with the schools and partner organisations – that a bright future has been ensured for the Skate Club.

John adds,

“The amount of work to keep things running each day is insane, but it remains the best job in the world. I’m grateful for everyone that has been part of skate club to this point.

“We wouldn’t be here without you. Here’s to many more years, and much more skating.”

To that we say, ‘hear hear!’
