Kathryn Rossati, Isle of Wight author, shortlisted for Rubery Book Award

Congratulations to Kathryn Rossati, an author based on the Isle of Wight, whose book has been shortlisted for the 2025 Rubery Book Award in the Children’s and Young Adult category.

Kathryn’s novel, Naturally Nic/k, is recognised for its fresh and original approach to historical adventure, weaving in themes of neurodivergence and magic.

Time-slip tale with a magical twist
The story follows Nic, a girl from the present day who struggles at school and is often bullied. She finds escape in magic and illusion, and her interest deepens when her best friend gives her an old diary filled with descriptions of tricks.

A school trip to the Thames Tunnel sets the stage for an unexpected twist, transporting Nic back in time to Victorian London, where she meets Nicolai – the diary’s original author and the son of a magician performing in the tunnel.

A gripping adventure with heart
As children begin to disappear from the streets, Nic and Nicolai work together to uncover the truth. Their journey includes capture, escape, and a final confrontation with the villain, building to a thrilling climax.

Nic returns to the present day with new confidence, and the story closes with a moving and satisfying conclusion.

The novel is praised for its vivid portrayal of Victorian life, particularly the atmosphere of the Thames Tunnel and the poverty of the time. The growing friendship between the two children and the use of illusion throughout make the book stand out.

Kathryn Rossati is an AuDHD and disabled writer of middle grade and young adult fiction, as well as a poet.
