Local author Jan Wright’s collection of short stories titled A Different Way of Life has so far raised over £1,200 to support Mountbatten, the Isle of Wight’s only provider of hospice care.
The book, a compilation of 20 feel-good stories set around the backdrop of Island life, aims to raise funds and awareness for the vital end-of-life care provided by the charity.
From estate agent to author
Jan’s writing career began in the 1990s, alongside running the family-owned Wright Estate Agency with her husband, Phil.
She crafted short stories for popular women’s magazines like Woman’s Weekly, My Weekly, and Take a Break, captivating readers both locally and internationally with her blend of romance, humour and relatable characters.
Jan explains,
“I’ve always enjoyed writing short stories.
“It’s a way to create a complete world in a short space of time, and it’s very satisfying to see a story come together.”
Inspired by personal experience
Jan’s motivation for writing A Different Way of Life stems from a personal connection to Mountbatten Isle of Wight.
After witnessing the compassionate care provided to a close friend in the 1990s, and again more recently with another friend’s death, she felt compelled to give back to the charity that had provided so much support.
Jan says,
“Mountbatten made a difficult time a little easier.
“I wanted to do something meaningful to help them continue their important work.”
Inspired by assisting a friend in publishing a poetry collection for another charity, Jan decided to compile her own stories into a book, with all profits going directly to Mountbatten Isle of Wight.
Stories from the Island
A Different Way of Life offers readers a glimpse into the unique charm and character of the Isle of Wight through a series of feel-good stories.
From tales set during the bustle of Cowes Week and headiness of the Isle of Wight Festival, to narratives about “overners” finding a new home on its shores, the collection celebrates the Island’s diverse landscapes and vibrant spirit.
Jan says,
“The stories are designed to be light and enjoyable.
“They reflect the unique character of the Isle of Wight and the people who live here.”
While the stories are largely romantic, Jan notes that they appeal to a broad audience. She adds,
“I’ve had men tell me they’ve really enjoyed the book, even those who don’t typically read fiction.”
Supporting vital hospice care across the Isle of Wight.
All profits from A Different Way of Life directly support Mountbatten Isle of Wight’s work in the community and at the hospice itself in Newport.
Priced at £6 in local shops, Jan encourages readers to donate what they can, with some individuals generously contributing upwards of £30 per copy.
Jan says,
“It’s a charity book, so every donation makes a difference.
“I hope the book not only raises funds but also brings a little joy to those who read it. It’s an ideal book for the beach.”
