Bob Seely and Boris Johnson

Letter: It’s critical Bob Seely adds his name to list of MPs calling for Boris Johnson to resign immediately (updated)

News OnTheWight always welcomes a Letter to the Editor to share with our readers – unsurprisingly they don’t always reflect the views of this publication. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch and of course, your considered comments are welcome below.

Leo Harverson from Cowes shares this Open Letter to Isle of Wight Conservative MP, Bob Seely. Bob’s response has been added to the bottom of this letter. Ed

I’m sure you are aware how ridiculous it will make you look to do so, but it is now critical that you add your name to the list of MPs calling for Boris Johnson to immediately resign.

You have thus far escaped the level of scrutiny levied at the Prime Minister and Rishi Sunak MP, despite having committed the exact same breach of Lockdown rules and having broken the trust of your own constituents.

Retaining Boris Johnson as PM plays right into Russian narrative
As I’m sure you are well aware, the continued presence of a PM compromised by his lies and criminal behaviour only serves to ensure Putin’s Kremlin can point-the-finger.

At this stage, retaining Boris Johnson as PM plays right into the narrative that the West is poorly-led and without credibility. Boris Johnson has made himself a ‘useful idiot’ to Putin’s warfare propaganda, and any suggestion that now is not the time to depose our PM is a false argument.

The very thought of UK politicians using the deaths and suffering of Ukrainian citizens as a reason to keep Boris Johnson as PM is reprehensible and deeply offensive.

Break your apparent silence
I trust that you will now therefore break your apparent silence on this matter and state your lack of confidence in the PM.

In the event that you feel unable or unwilling to do so, I expect you to tender your own resignation as MP for the Isle of Wight.

Complicit
Your continued presence as an MP would otherwise make you complicit in propping-up a government led by a deeply (criminally) flawed man.

I expect a full, detailed and personal response to this email. Do not assume I will be satisfied with the type of copy/paste correspondence usually sent from your office.

Response from Bob Seely

Dear Mr Harverson,

Thank you for contacting me about the Prime Minister.

I understand the depth of feeling with regards to this issue. As I have said previously, I hope that lessons will be learnt. The Prime Minister has stated that changes will be made to how both Downing Street and the Cabinet Office are run following these events. He has apologised to the House of Commons and the public and it is clear that mistakes were made. I understand that Police investigations are continuing and feel that it would be inappropriate to make comment on an ongoing investigation.

As to the amendment last week, I would have voted for the amendment. It is right that Parliament looks into this further and I believe it was right that a free vote was offered by the Government.

As ever, I will be focused on the Island’s priorities.

Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

Kind regards,

Bob
Robert Seely MP
Member of Parliament, Isle of Wight
