A group of Mountbatten staff are preparing to take on an extraordinary challenge — 66 miles of The Big Wight Walk, on Saturday, 27th September, 2025 — supporting vital care provided by the charity.
Over just 24 hours, nurses Julie and Theresa, and Dr Jane, director of psychosocial and spiritual care, will aim to cover 106 kilometres around the Isle of Wight. This gruelling challenge is nearly two and half times the distance of Mountbatten’s iconic Walk the Wight.
Highlighting work of Mountbatten
Setting off at 7am, they aim to highlight how Mountbatten Isle of Wight’s end-of-life care reaches every corner of the Island, including in homes, through the John Cheverton Centre and on the inpatient unit.
They will be raising money as they go, and you can support their challenge via their Enthuse fundraising page.

Rasmussen: Always keen to set myself challenges
Nurse, Julie Rasmussen, said,
“I take full responsibility for this being my idea — sorry! I am always keen to set myself challenges to raise awareness and money for Mountbatten, whilst I am fit enough to do so.
“This is going to be a tough challenge, requiring physical and mental strength — but it will also be very rewarding and it is all on a great cause!”
Julie is no stranger to endurance events, including twice taking on the Three Peaks Challenge.
McNamara: Showing how Mountbatten is there for everyone, everywhere
Inpatient unit manager, Theresa McNamara, said,
“We’re doing this to show how Mountbatten Isle of Wight is there for everyone, everywhere on the Island.
“Knowing we’re raising funds to support the people we care for will keep us going.”
Hoping to raise £2,000, the team has so far clocked-up over 600km in training in their spare time.
How to support

Dr Jane Hazeldine regularly completes Walk the Wight but knows this time will be different, because the team will be walking overnight.
“We are all experienced walkers, but clocking up the miles in the dark will be new to all of us.
“Our motivation is that Mountbatten Isle of Wight is such an amazing organisation and everything we raise will help support the people we care for, ensuring dignity and compassion when they are at their most vulnerable.”
