A remarkable piece of Isle of Wight history has been brought back to the Island after Restore the Story CIC successfully purchased the personal photograph album of Dorothy O’Grady, the woman who became known as the “Isle of Wight Spy.”
Dating from 1939, the album recently appeared at auction. Recognising its historical importance, Restore the Story CIC was determined to bring it back to the Isle of Wight before it disappeared into another private collection.
The purchase was made possible thanks to funds raised through the CIC’s talks, guided tours, exhibitions and publications, together with generous donations from supporters who share its passion for preserving the Island’s history.
More than just photographs
The album is far more than a collection of photographs. It contains official Enemy Documents Section stamps dating from 1940, while several photographs believed to have been of interest to wartime investigators have been removed.
Dorothy’s name and address are still engraved on a plate attached to the front cover, making it a unique artefact connected to one of the Island’s most fascinating wartime stories.

‘We knew we had to bring it back’
Steve, of Restore the Story CIC, said,
“As soon as we saw the album come up for auction, we knew we had to do everything we could to bring it back to the Isle of Wight. It’s an incredible piece of our history, and we’re thrilled that visitors will be able to see it for themselves.
“This simply wouldn’t have been possible without the support we’ve received over the years. Every person who has attended one of our talks, joined a tour, visited an exhibition, bought one of our publications or made a donation has helped us rescue and preserve another piece of Island history. We’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported us.”
On public display for the first time
The album will go on public display for the first time as part of Restore the Story CIC’s Second World War exhibition at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway’s 1940s Experience, taking place on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th July 2026.
Visitors to the exhibition will be able to see the album alongside displays telling the story of the Isle of Wight during the Second World War, with volunteers on hand to explain its significance and answer questions.
