The Island’s MP, Andrew Turner, attended a Dog’s Trust event in Westminster to support their work in highlighting widespread, illegal puppy smuggling and campaigning to wipe it out.

The Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, carried out their first report into puppy smuggling last year and has just conducted its second, in-depth, report focusing on puppies travelling illegally into Britain under the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS).

Extensive evidence was found showing that underage puppies are still regularly entering the country, often from Eastern Europe on false documentation produced by vets and subsequently sold to unsuspecting consumers.

Mr Turner said:

“Dogs Trust is working with others to stamp out this illegal practice. Many people have been affected by this; unwittingly buying puppies without knowing from where they have come. The Dog’s Trust believe this will have affected dog-lovers on the Island.

“These practices carry the risk of disease to humans as well as dogs. From a welfare point of view the puppies are often bred in terrible conditions and are then too young to be transferred long distances, which can cause behavioural difficulties as well. Stronger measures are needed to deter puppy smugglers as well as constant vigilance at our borders.

“Anyone thinking of getting a puppy should do their research and look carefully at their background. Even better, consider giving a loving home to a dog from one of the rescue organisations on the Island – from personal experience I know how rewarding that is.

“However, as we approach the festive period, please remember the famous Dog’s Trust slogan ‘A dog is for life, not just for Christmas.’”
