Sandown Bay could soon be home to a distinctive coastal attraction after Isle of Wight Sea Pool gained support from the Isle of Wight Council’s policy, finance and resources committee.
The group behind the idea can now seek external funding following the council’s decision to issue a non-binding Letter of Intent.
Vision for sustainable leisure
Isle of Wight Sea Pool first approached the council in 2023 and has spent more than 18 months developing the concept.
The plan is to build an eco-friendly tidal sea pool at Yaverland, offering safe and accessible swimming for residents and visitors. The proposed 70-metre site sits on council-owned foreshore between two groynes near Culver Parade, next to the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary.

Next steps for the project
The council’s Letter of Intent confirms support in principle and a willingness to consider leasing the land, subject to planning approval, a strong business case and public consultation.
Council officers emphasised that the agreement does not include any financial commitment at this stage, but it marks a key milestone in the project’s journey.
Councillors welcome the progress
Councillor Phil Jordan, Isle of Wight Council leader and committee chair, said,
“This is a visionary project that aligns with our goals for sustainable tourism and community wellbeing.
“The sea pool has the potential to become a landmark attraction for the Island, and I’m pleased we’re enabling the group to take the next steps toward making it a reality.”
Councillor Ian Ward, member for Sandown South, said,
“The sea pool proposal is an exciting opportunity to bring something truly unique to our Island — something that supports health, wellbeing, tourism and the regeneration of Sandown.
“I’m pleased to see it progressing and look forward to further engagement with the community as plans develop.”
