Clarinet Concerto by Carl Davis to premiere at Isle of Wight Symphony concert

For their next concert on Saturday 1st November 2025, the Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra will be joined by the fabulous clarinettist David Campbell.

David has enjoyed an illustrious and varied career, performing with the English Chamber Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. His love of playing clarinet quintets has led to fruitful collaborations with the Brodsky and Endellion String Quartets. David is also a gifted teacher and is currently Director of Winds at Canterbury Christ Church University.

Isle of Wight premiere
He will be performing a work composed for him in 1984 by Carl Davis. The composer enjoyed a long and highly successful career, writing music for the concert hall together with a wide range of film and TV soundtracks. These include his BAFTA award-winning score for ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’.

The Clarinet Concerto is a virtuosic and a highly expressive work which will receive its Isle of Wight premiere. It is sure to be a treat for the Medina audience.

Also on the programme is Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s exquisite ‘Petite Concert Suite’ and Elgar’s magnificent Symphony no.1. Elgar spent ten years considering ideas for the symphony and the resulting work is a masterpiece, one the finest symphonies by a British composer.

Book tickets
The concert takes place on Saturday 1st November 2025, at Medina Theatre. The evening begins at 7.15pm and the orchestra is delighted to be supporting The Southampton and Isle of Wight Music Trust, Middleton Bursary Scheme at all of its concerts this season.
