Speedway: Johnson ruled out after try out

Thanks to Bryn for this update from the Wightlink Islander’s speedway team. Ed

After a vigorous on-track work out at Smallbrook last night, recent-signing Brendan Johnson was forced to somewhat reluctantly admit that the ankle he damaged in last week’s home KO Cup win over the Kent Kings would not stand up to the rigours of riding in two important away National League matches in the space of three days.

Brendan JohnsonHe took to the track prior to the amateur Southern Track Riders Association meeting and whilst his heart wanted the verdict to be that he’d be fit to take his place in the Wightlink Islanders’ side at King’s Lynn tonight and Coventry on Friday, his racing brain sent out the message that the damaged right ankle had not healed sufficiently.

He said,

“I’m absolutely gutted, as I really thought I’d be okay but the pain shooting up my leg anytime I put any pressure on the footrest as you have to do when sliding around the track bends on a speedway bike was just too much.

“I desperately wanted to ride in both away matches, particularly the Coventry one where I started the season, but it just wouldn’t be right to do so as far as we bid to move up the league table.”

Once it became clear that Brendan wouldn’t be able to ride, co-promoter Chris Hunt was immediately on the phone to try and find a rider to step into the breach and was mightily relieved when Dudley’s Paul Starke, who rode for us last season, agreed to ride for the Wightlink Islanders tonight in Norfolk.

He said,

“With Tom Perry and Danny Stoneman currently sidelined and Brendan now joining them I’ve had to work hard to put together a competitive side for tonight’s tough match in Norfolk, and I’m very grateful to Starkey for agreeing to ride.

“With us having to use the rider replacement regulations to cover for Danny’s absence whereby his programmed rides are shared amongst other team members, I’d already had to obtain the services of Coventry’s Rob Branford to fill Tom Perry’s place at No.1 tonight.

“It’s a makeshift team for sure but once the six riders we’ve got put on our race-jackets, my fellow promoter Kev Shepherd and I both know they’ll give maximum effort and hopefully we can get something out of tonight’s match in terms of league points.”

Prior to setting off for Saddlebow Road this afternoon, Hunt will be phoning around the country once again to find guest riders for Friday’s match at Coventry and hopefully will positive responses to his efforts.

Mildenhall next in the KO Cup semi-finals
Mildenhall are the team that stand between the Wightlink Islanders and this year’s KO Cup final after the draw for the semi-finals was made. Dates have yet to be agreed between the two clubs for the staging of the home and away legs.
