Stay vigilant: poisonous plant identified on Bembridge beach after recent storms

HM Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team has received a report of a highly poisonous plant on Bembridge beach.

The plant is Hemlock Water Dropwort, also known as Dead Man’s Fingers.

Severe risk to people and animals
Even a small amount ingested can prove fatal to humans because it attacks the nervous system.

The plant also poses a fatal risk to animals.

How to recognise the plant
The plant has a highly poisonous root that looks and smells like parsnip.

This similarity increases the risk of accidental contact or ingestion.

Stormy weather likely cause
Recent stormy weather has likely washed the plant ashore.

Bembridge Coastguard advises people to stay vigilant, especially those with children and animals.

Advice to beach users
People should avoid the plant and take extra care when visiting the beach.

Anyone in difficulty on the coast or at sea should dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
