Calbourne Mill hosted a training day and walk for a group of the Isle of Wight Tree Council Tree Warden Network, on 17th June 2026.
The event was funded by the Tree Council and is part of Wight Nature Fund’s initiative to champion the trees of the Isle of Wight.
Understanding tree growth and structure
Local expert tree surveyor and arboriculturist, Ben Riches, of Arb Advice delivered an interesting series of interactive sessions covering understanding of tree growth, structure and their irregularities.

He brought with him cross sections of trunks and types of branching for wardens to examine to understand the growth of trees.
There were many questions, and input from wardens showed a wide range of knowledge and experience.

When to leave trees alone
Ben stressed that ‘tidying up’ trees, trimming branches was often damaging to the future well-being of trees.
Action should only be taken where there was a qualified danger to people.
Fungi and tree health
Photos and descriptions of the special fungi found on local trees were fascinating, and raised awareness in understanding more about the health of trees.

The day ended with walk around the grounds of the Mill.
Putting skills into practice
This practical exercise allowed everyone to test their skills at interpreting growth and identifying potential problems.
Thanks to all concerned.
