League points up for grabs at tonight’s speedway

The Wight Warriors are in action at the Andrew Younie Smallbrook stadium, Ashey Road, Ryde not once, but twice this week thus serving up a double dose of high speed action astride their 500cc highly tuned motorcycles with no brakes!

Tuesday evening it’s the one that really counts as there are league points up for grabs, and a measure of revenge to go with those too, with the Wight Warriors clash with the Kent Kings, the only team to beat us at home this year, which they did in both the National Trophy and KO Cup matches earlier this season.

The Wight Warriors are determined to come out on top, claim the three league points at stake and in doing so prevent Kent, who are still smarting from defeats inflicted upon them at home to Birmingham last Monday and at Eastbourne on Saturday.

Team news is that Matt Williamson will again deputise for Benji Compton at No.1 for the Warriors, no doubt eager to repeat the double figure score he recorded against Coventry last week, whilst we’re still awaiting confirmation as to who will replace the injured Nick Phillips at reserve, Nick being ruled out because of the dislocated elbow he suffered as a result of his crash last week. Kent will be at full strength with skipper Luke Bowen and Luke Clifton both having recovered from recent injuries.

The atmosphere last week was electric and the Warriors stepped up another gear with Mark Baseby smashing the fastest time set for four laps of the Smallbrook circuit this year but we are well aware, as are the team that they’ll have to be at their best tonight to overcome the nemesis that is the Kings and thus are appealing to fans to turn out in force and back them to the hilt.

As per usual there’s free entry for kids with free sweets provided on production of a special voucher by the Isle of Wight Sweet Shop, the pits area will be open from 17.45 to 18,15, there will autograph signing during the interval break, facilities include a bar, food outlets, covered seating, a souvenir stall, Wilbur and much much more. A night of fun, drama, excitement and enjoyment for young and old alike and in particular, families so don’t miss it!

Warriors aiming to clip the Falcons’ wings
The Wight Warriors return again to the Andrew Younie Smallbrook stadium on Thursday when they’ll take on a side representing a famous old British club — the Exeter Falcons – in the Solent Trophy. There’s a dedicated group of people who have assembled the side to represent the Devonian City club and their own intention of making their dream come true, that dream being to see their famous club back racing at their own venue and staging league racing.

Our own head duo of Barry and Martin have shown here that such things can happen so let’s hope we do see our sport back at Exeter in the future, albeit at a different location to their former County Ground home complete with its unique sheet metal safety fence that owners Exeter RFC sold for development back in 2005. A full match preview will be issued on Wednesday.

Next week
The Wight Warriors face three vital league matches next week, firstly travelling to Kent’s Central Park stadium next Monday before taking on the Cradley Heathens at home on Thursday before travelling to King’s Lynn the following day.

“A busy scheduled indeed for both man and machinery on top of this week’s two meetings,” commented a club spokesman, “but one everybody at the club is eagerly looking forward to.”
