WightFest 2009

Live music and the Isle of Wight seem to go hand in hand these days.

So far this year we’ve had the pleasure of Isle of Wight Festival, the Osborne House concerts, the Didghead Radio Festival and coming up over the next few weeks will the Summer Madness event, Bestival and also a new day long charity music event called WightFest.

WightFest 2009The brainchild of the event is one of the Island music scene’s most popular photographers, Roger Regular, and he tells us that the event aims to raise awareness and much needed funds for the MS Society (IOW branch) and Sue Ryder Care.

Taking place on Saturday 22nd August, the day kicks off at Midday and is filled with fun and music throughout the day finishing at 11pm.

There is a great lineup of bands as well as loads for the kids to do during the day if they don’t have your same love of music.

Probably the best line-up of Island bands outside of the two big festivals

* REVERB One of the Islands youngest bands playing their own material
* FOLSOM PRISON BLUES BAND A Johnny Cash tribute band
* SHOOT THE MOON An acoustic duo playing covers
* SUNDOWN CITY A band with their own material – played at the IOW festival
* PDQ A cover band doing rock and ballads
* PAPA DO PLENTY A fresh new band – who opened-up Sundays main stage at the IOW Festival
* THE KURVES A band with original material – also played at the 2008 IOW Bestival
* GWEIDO A well established band – who played in the big top at the IOW Festival
* THE CHANCERS Popular band who regularly play in the Hipshaker tent at the IOW Festivals

Glyn Taylor from the Isle of Wight Radio will be doing his bit as MC for the day and the kids should have lots of fund with performances from a magician, face painting, BBQ and possibly two hot tubs and ice cream van!

There’ll be plenty of refreshments on offer (including well priced beer) as well as hot and cold food.

Getting there
There is easy access to the club if you are travelling from the mainland via Southampton. The Red Jet catamaran service docks at Cowes, then the club is a mile walk straight up the road from the pontoon.

There are buses that stop right outside the club (Service No 1 to Newport – note that there are two routes for this service – use the one identified ‘via Round House’ – the ‘wrong’ one is identified ‘via Park & Ride’!).

Taxis are normally readily available from the pontoon. It may be possible to arrange lifts if anyone needs assistance, contact the organisers if you are in any doubt.

If travelling on other ferries, bus information can be found online
