1–7 August marks World Breastfeeding Week, with this year’s theme — “Invest in breastfeeding, invest in the future” — encouraging communities to support families in their infant feeding choices.
The focus is on sustainable breastfeeding, ensuring that parents have access to the right information, supportive environments, and practical help to feed their babies for as long as they choose.
Free family event in Victoria Recreation Ground
To support this message, the Isle of Wight Council, the Breastfeeding Network, Health Visiting and Maternity Services are hosting a free event: Picnic in the Park.
Families are invited to bring a blanket and their own food to Victoria Recreation Ground, Newport (PO30 5AH) on Tuesday 5th August from 1pm–3pm.
The afternoon offers a relaxed and welcoming space to meet other parents, speak with infant feeding supporters, and share experiences from breastfeeding journeys across the Island.
Support, fun and information
There will be infant feeding support available on-site, activities for young children, and a raffle with prizes donated by members of the Isle of Wight Breastfeeding Friendly Scheme.
Refreshments and information about local services will also be available.
In the event of rain, the picnic will move into The Pavilion at the same location.
Empowering families and building confidence
Sustainable breastfeeding is about enabling families to breastfeed for as long as they want, whether that’s weeks, months or years.
The Isle of Wight Council offers a range of support including:
- Local infant feeding advice and services
- Breastfeeding Friendly Venues across the Island
- Access to the Anya app, which provides expert advice and virtual support 24/7
Bryant: Breastfeeding is a personal journey
Simon Bryant, the Isle of Wight’s Director of Public Health, said,
“Breastfeeding is a personal journey, and our role as a community is to ensure that every parent feels supported to continue for as long as they choose.”
Open to all
All families and professionals are welcome to attend the picnic and take part in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week.
